Laparoscopy has transformed the way many gynecologic and other surgical procedures are performed. Surgeries that once required a hospital stay are now routinely conducted on an outpatient basis in the physician’s office or at the hospital. 

Also, many surgeries that required significant incisions can be performed with only minimal discomfort.  Potentially serious surgical complications such as infection, scarring, and adhesions are dramatically reduced. Another major advantage of laparoscopy is that is allows the physician to directly view the reproductive organs.

The laparoscopy requires that two small openings be created one at the pubic hair line and one at the belly button.  The laparoscope is a telescope-like device that is inserted in one opening and the operative tools are manipulated through the second opening.

The abdomen is usually distended with carbon dioxide gas to increase visibility.  Many conditions such as blocked tubes, polycystic ovaries and uterine abnormalities can be corrected through use of the laparoscope.

Fertility specialists undergo years of advanced training including experience performing delicate microsurgical procedures. All gynecologic surgeries for fertility must be performed with extreme care to reduce the possibility of scarring or adhesion formation which could further interfere with reproductive function.

In general, all surgical infertility procedures should be performed by a board certified fertility specialist. In addition to the reasons above, the specialist can often treat diseases, such as endometriosis, during the diagnostic procedure thus eliminating the expense of another “treatment” procedure.
