IVF often leads to the development of more embryos that
can be safely transferred into the patient. Many are cryopreserved for
subsequent attempts at pregnancy by these patients. Patients may also
elect to donate their extra embryos either to scientific research and
educational purposes within the Center. They can also donate them
specifically to human embryonic stem cell (HuESC) research projects. They
may elect to contract with private companies that will attempt to derive
HuESCs and cryopreserve them for future use by the patient’s children as
they would be good tissue “matches”. They can also specify donation to
agencies that try to locate “adopting” couples that will try to conceive
with them.
